About Spook Jacobs
Forrest Vandergrift "Spook" Jacobs was a light-hitting, slick-fielding second baseman who reached the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954 after service in the U.S. Army during World War II and years in the minors. A right-handed slap hitter listed at 5-foot-9, he made one of the most famous debuts in history: on April 13, 1954, he singled in each of his first four at-bats, one of only a handful of players ever to go 4-for-4 in a big-league debut. He played three seasons (1954-1956) for the Philadelphia and Kansas City Athletics and the Pittsburgh Pirates, batting .247 with 164 hits, 33 RBI, and 22 stolen bases (17 as a 1954 rookie) over 188 games. His nickname "Spook," which appears on this card, was hung on him by a sportswriter during his Johnstown minor-league days for his knack of dumping hits just over infielders' heads. Late in life he was honored by both the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame and the Cuban Sports Hall of Fame, reportedly the only American in both. He died in 2011 in Milford, Delaware.
