About Bill Renna

A star three-sport athlete at Santa Clara University after Marine Corps service in the World War II South Pacific, the 6-foot-3, 218-pound Bill Renna signed and began his pro career in 1949, earning the fitting nickname "Big Bill." The right-handed outfielder reached the majors in 1953 with the New York Yankees, hitting .314 in 61 games as a rookie for that year's World Series champions. He then spent the bulk of his career with the Athletics - Philadelphia in 1954 and Kansas City in 1955-56 - before finishing with the Boston Red Sox in 1958-59. His best season came in 1954, when he posted career highs of 13 home runs and 53 RBI while batting .254 in 123 games. Over parts of six big-league seasons Renna hit .239 with 219 hits, 28 home runs, and 119 RBI in 370 games. He was among the first Santa Clara graduates to reach the majors. Fittingly for this uncorrected-error card, its back lists the wrong birth year - Renna was born in 1924.
