About Charlie Bishop

A right-handed starting pitcher, Charlie Bishop (full name Charles Tuller Bishop, born January 1, 1924, in Atlanta, Georgia) signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1942 and worked his way up through the minors, his climb interrupted by two years of U.S. Navy service in World War II. He threw a no-hitter in the Class B Piedmont League in 1948 and won a dozen games for Triple-A Ottawa before reaching the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics on August 22, 1952. Bishop spent all four of his big-league seasons (1952-1955) with the Athletics franchise, following it to Kansas City for its 1955 debut, where he made his final appearance on May 7. He tossed a one-hit shutout in the 1953 Caribbean Series and blanked the Red Sox in his first 1953 start, but finished 10-22 with a 5.33 ERA and 121 strikeouts over 69 games.
