About Bob Trice
Robert Lee Trice (born August 28, 1926, in Newton, Georgia; died 1988) was a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher whose card closes out Series 1 of the 1955 Topps set. He entered pro ball with the Negro leagues' Homestead Grays in 1948, converting from position player to pitcher, then climbed the Athletics' farm system and went 21-10 for the Triple-A Ottawa A's in 1953, earning International League MVP and Rookie of the Year honors. Called up that September, Trice made history on September 13, 1953, becoming the first Black player in Philadelphia Athletics history - indeed the first for any Philadelphia major-league club. His signature moment came April 24, 1954, when he threw a 1-0 complete-game shutout of the defending World Series champion New York Yankees. A shoulder injury curtailed his career, and he made his final big-league appearances after the franchise moved to Kansas City in 1955. Over three seasons (1953-1955) he went 9-9 with a 5.80 ERA, 9 complete games, and 28 strikeouts in 26 pitching appearances, and hit .288 with a home run. This is his lone Topps card (not a rookie card in this set).
