About Gus Zernial

Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1941 at age 17, right-handed slugger Gus Zernial broke into pro ball at Class D Waycross before military service and a monster 41-homer minor-league campaign vaulted him to the majors. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1949 and played 11 seasons (1949-1959) as a left fielder for the White Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Kansas City Athletics, and Detroit Tigers, batting .265 with 1,093 hits, 237 home runs, and 776 RBI over 1,234 games. In 1951, traded mid-season to the Athletics, he led the American League with 33 home runs and topped the majors with 129 RBI, and he started in left field for the AL in the 1953 All-Star Game. Nicknamed "Ozark Ike" in 1948 by Hollywood Stars broadcaster Fred Haney after a comic-strip mountain-boy sports star, he was one of the AL's most feared power hitters of the decade. His legendary 1952 Topps card, showing six baseballs mounted on his bat, immortalized his May 1951 feat of six homers in three straight games.
