About Bill Wilson

Bill Wilson (William Donald Wilson, 1928-2017), a right-handed-hitting center fielder from Central City, Nebraska, began his professional career in 1947 and reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1950. He appeared in 224 big-league games across 1950 and 1953-1955, splitting the bulk of his career between the White Sox and the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics after Kansas City acquired him from Chicago on June 11, 1954. His signature moment came on Opening Day 1955: on April 12, before a crowd that included Connie Mack and former President Harry Truman, Wilson hit the first home run in Kansas City major-league history, an eighth-inning solo shot off Van Fletcher at Municipal Stadium. Over his four seasons he batted .222 with 145 hits, 32 home runs, and 77 RBI; 30 of those home runs came for the Athletics. This 1955 Topps card captures him during that final season as a Kansas City Athletic.
