About Arnie Portocarrero
A hard-throwing right-hander born July 5, 1931, in New York City to a Puerto Rican father, Arnold Mario Portocarrero starred at George Washington High School (a 29-0 prep record) before the Athletics signed him in 1949. After brief minor-league stints and two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he reached the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954, going 9-18 with a 4.06 ERA for a last-place club despite pitching better than the record showed. He moved with the franchise to Kansas City (1955-57) - the team shown on this 1955 card - then was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for Bud Daley in April 1958. That year he enjoyed his finest season, winning a career-high 15 games with a 3.25 ERA and setting an Orioles single-season franchise wins record. Over seven seasons (1954-1960) with the Athletics and Orioles he went 38-57 with a 4.32 ERA and 338 strikeouts in 166 games. He died June 21, 1986, in Kansas City, Kansas, at age 54.
