About Gordon Jones
Gordon Bassett Jones (April 2, 1930 - April 25, 1994) was a right-handed pitcher signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent before the 1949 season. The Portland, Oregon native made his major-league debut on August 6, 1954, starting the opener of a doubleheader against the Pirates at Forbes Field, and that rookie year proved his finest: he went 4-4 with a 2.00 ERA and two shutouts. Over 11 big-league seasons he pitched for the Cardinals (1954-1956), New York/San Francisco Giants (1957-1959), Baltimore Orioles (1960-1961), Kansas City Athletics (1962), and Houston Colt .45s/Astros (1964-1965), finishing 15-18 with a 4.14 ERA, 12 saves, and 232 strikeouts over 171 appearances. Known for pinpoint control, he walked just 120 batters in 378.2 innings for nearly a 2-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, exceptional for his era. After his playing days he served as the Astros' pitching coach in 1966-1967. This 1955 Topps #78 is Jones's rookie card.
