1955 Topps #204 Frank Smith

About Frank Smith
Frank Thomas Smith (April 4, 1928 - September 24, 2005), born in Pierrepont Manor, New York, was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds in 1950 after climbing through the club's farm system, including stops with the Columbia Reds, Tulsa Oilers, and Nashville Vols. Working mostly out of the bullpen, he pitched seven big-league seasons (1950-1956), spending 1950-1954 with the Reds, moving to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1955 - the club shown on this 1955 Topps card - and returning to Cincinnati (by then the Redlegs) for a final 1956 campaign. One of the National League's busier relievers of the early 1950s, he posted a 20-save season for Cincinnati and finished with 44 career saves. Over 271 appearances he compiled a 35-33 record with a 3.81 ERA and 277 strikeouts. Card #204 is a Series 2 high-number, the scarcer half of the set. Smith died in 2005 at his home in Malone, Florida, at age 77.

Variations & how to tell them apart
High Number (#161-210)
Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
