About Tony Jacobs

Anthony Robert "Tony" Jacobs was a right-handed pitcher whose big-league career amounted to just two games seven years apart, making this 1955 Topps high number (his only significant card, a true rookie card) a prized rarity. Born August 5, 1925, in Dixmoor, Illinois, Jacobs debuted for the Chicago Cubs on September 19, 1948, against the Brooklyn Dodgers, and in that lone outing struck out future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Pee Wee Reese, though he also surrendered a home run to Gene Hermanski. He spent 12 seasons (1946-1957) in the minors, winning 97 games, and starred as an International League reliever, going a composite 25-4 in 111 appearances for the Springfield Cubs and Rochester Red Wings in 1953-1954. That earned him a return to the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals, but his only 1955 appearance came on Opening Day, April 12, at Wrigley Field, where he allowed four runs on six hits in two innings. His MLB ledger reads 0-0 with an 11.25 ERA, three strikeouts in four innings. Jacobs died December 21, 1980, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Variations & how to tell them apart

High Number (#161-210)

Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
