1955 Topps #182 Humberto Robinson
1955 Topps #182 Humberto Robinson

About Humberto Robinson
Humberto "Berto" Robinson holds a permanent place in baseball history as the first Panamanian-born player to appear in the major leagues. Born June 25, 1930, in Colon, Panama, the right-handed pitcher was signed by the New York Yankees in 1951 and made his name in the minors, going 23-8 in 1954 for Class A Jacksonville and setting a South Atlantic (Sally) League single-season record for wins. That performance earned him a call-up, and on April 20, 1955, he debuted for the Milwaukee Braves, breaking the majors' Panamanian barrier. Over five seasons (1955-1960) with the Braves, Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies, the slender sidearmer went 8-13 with a 3.25 ERA, four saves and 114 strikeouts in 102 games. His most celebrated moment came off the mound: in September 1959 he refused a $1,500 bribe to throw a game, reported it, and helped convict the gambler, Harold "Boomie" Friedman. This 1955 Topps high-number card (#182) is Robinson's rookie card. He died September 29, 2009, in Brooklyn, remembered as a pioneer for the many Panamanians who followed.

Variations & how to tell them apart
High Number (#161-210)
Series 2 (#161-210) shipped in the fall against the new football-card season, so retailers cut their orders and far fewer were printed. As a result the set's biggest high-number names - Roberto Clemente (RC), Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider - are tougher than low-number stars such as Williams, Robinson and Aaron.
