About Jim Pendleton
James Edward Pendleton (January 7, 1924 - March 20, 1996) was a versatile infielder-outfielder who broke in with the Chicago American Giants of the Negro leagues, starring at shortstop and batting around .301 in 1948. He entered organized ball when the St. Paul Saints acquired him in 1949, later advancing through the Brooklyn Dodgers system with the Montreal Royals before a four-team trade sent him to the Milwaukee Braves in February 1953. Converted to the outfield, Pendleton debuted on April 17, 1953 at age 29 and hit near .299 as a rookie. His signature moment came August 30, 1953, when he clubbed three home runs in a single game against the Pittsburgh Pirates - only the second rookie in major-league history to do so, joining teammate Eddie Mathews. Over eight seasons (1953-1962) with the Braves, Pirates, Reds, and expansion Houston Colt .45s, he batted .259 with roughly 19-20 home runs across 444 games. This 1955 Topps card (#15) is a documented error: the back's birth year is wrong - Pendleton was actually born in 1924.
