About Eddie Mathews
Signed by the Boston Braves in 1949 out of Santa Barbara (CA) High School, Eddie Mathews reached the majors as the Braves' third baseman in 1952 and became the only man to play for the franchise in all three of its cities: Boston (1952), Milwaukee (1953-1965), and Atlanta (1966). A 12-time All-Star, he led the National League in home runs in 1953 (47) and 1959, finished MVP runner-up both years, and anchored Milwaukee's 1957 World Series champions - hitting a walk-off two-run homer off Bob Grim in Game 4 and making the final putout of Game 7. He hit .271 with 512 home runs, 2,315 hits, and 1,453 RBI over 17 seasons, reaching 500 homers on July 14, 1967, and won a second title with the 1968 Detroit Tigers. Mathews was also the athlete on the first-ever Sports Illustrated cover (August 1954) and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1978. This semi-high-number card is one of the set's marquee Hall of Fame slugger cards.
