About Joey Jay

Joseph Richard "Joey" Jay was a right-handed pitcher from Middletown, Connecticut who earned lasting distinction as the first Little League graduate to reach the major leagues. A hard-throwing schoolboy who pitched three no-hitters, Jay signed with the Milwaukee Braves as a teenage "bonus baby," a contract whose signing rules forced the club to keep him on the big-league roster and stunted his early development - the reason he was still a young, under-used Brave when this 1955 Topps card was issued. He pitched 13 seasons (1953-1966) for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds, finishing 99-91 with a 3.77 ERA and 999 strikeouts. His career took off after a 1961 trade to Cincinnati, where he won 21 games, tied for the NL lead in wins and shutouts, and made the All-Star team; he then repeated with 21 wins in 1962. In the 1961 World Series against the Yankees, Jay threw a complete-game four-hitter to win Game 2, the Reds' only victory of the Series. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2008 and died in 2024 at age 89.
