About Johnny O'Brien

A basketball All-American at Seattle University, Johnny O'Brien became the first collegian to score 1,000 points in a season and famously dropped 43 in a January 1952 upset of the Harlem Globetrotters. Instead of the NBA, he and his identical twin, Eddie, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as bonus babies under Branch Rickey in March 1953, making them the first twins to play together for one team since the Shannon brothers in 1915. Primarily a second baseman who also took the mound, "Johnny-O" played six major-league seasons for the Pirates (1953, 1955-57), St. Louis Cardinals (1958), and Milwaukee Braves (1959). He batted .250 with 204 hits, 4 home runs, and 59 RBI over 339 games, and went 1-3 with a 5.61 ERA as a pitcher. Born in South Amboy, New Jersey, in 1930 (d. 2025), he later served on the King County Council and helped bring the Kingdome to Seattle.
