About Jerry Lynch
One of the most feared pinch-hitters in baseball history, Jerry Lynch was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Bay City, Michigan who broke into pro ball in 1950 and, after two years of military service, tore up the Class B Piedmont League (.333, 22 triples, 133 RBI) before Pittsburgh took him in the Rule 5 Draft. He debuted with the Pirates in 1954 and spent 13 seasons (1954-1966) split between Pittsburgh (1954-56, 1963-66) and the Cincinnati Reds (1957-63), batting .277 with 798 hits, 115 home runs, and 470 RBI over 1,184 games. Nicknamed "The Hat" and "Lynch the Pinch," he retired with 18 pinch-hit home runs (then third all-time). His signature moment came in 1961, when his .404 pinch-hitting drove the Reds to the pennant, capped by a two-run homer off the Cubs' Bob Anderson on September 26 to clinch it; his 25 pinch-hit RBI that year tied a major-league record. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1988. This is a first-series card of Lynch as a young Pirate; the back carries an uncorrected error in his minor-league line.
