About Tom Wright
Thomas Everette "Tom" Wright, a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Shelby, North Carolina, signed with the Boston Red Sox out of high school in 1941 after being scouted by Eddie Montague. His path to the majors was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Army Air Corps (1943-1946), including a deployment to the South Pacific. Returning to baseball, he tore up the minors, leading the Carolina League with a .380 average at Durham in 1946. Wright debuted for Boston on September 15, 1948, memorably tripling in his first major-league at-bat. Over nine seasons (1948-1956) he played for the Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox, and Washington Senators, primarily as a reserve outfielder and pinch-hitter. He batted .255 with 175 hits, 6 home runs, and 99 RBI across 341 games. On this 1955 Topps card he is pictured with the Senators, the club he closed out his career with before returning home to Shelby.
