About Roy Sievers
A power-hitting first baseman and left fielder, Roy Sievers signed out of a St. Louis high school with the hometown St. Louis Browns in the mid-1940s and, after Army service, reached the majors in 1949, when he won the inaugural American League Rookie of the Year Award. Over 17 seasons (1949-1965) he played for the Browns (1949-53), the original Washington Senators (1954-59), the Chicago White Sox (1960-61), the Philadelphia Phillies (1962-64), and the expansion Washington Senators (1964-65). A multiple-time All-Star, Sievers was the lone star on woeful Senators clubs, and in his standout 1957 season he led the AL in both home runs (42) and RBI (114) while batting .301. Nicknamed "Squirrel" for his habit of hanging around the cage as a lanky schoolboy basketball player, he retired with a .267 average, 318 home runs, 1,703 hits, and 1,147 RBI over 1,887 games. This 1955 Topps card (#16) captures him during his productive Washington years.
