1955 Topps #41 Chuck Stobbs

About Chuck Stobbs
A hard-throwing left-hander, Charles Klein Stobbs was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a "bonus baby" in 1947 for a reported $50,000, reaching the majors that September at age 18. Over 15 seasons (1947-1961) he pitched for the Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, and St. Louis Cardinals, finishing 107-130 with a 4.29 ERA and 897 strikeouts across 459 games. His best year came in 1956, when he posted a career-high 15 wins (against 15 losses) for Washington. Stobbs is best remembered for a pitch he wished he could take back: on April 17, 1953, at Griffith Stadium, 21-year-old Mickey Mantle drove a Stobbs fastball clear out of the ballpark, a blast famously measured at 565 feet that gave birth to the term "tape-measure home run." After his playing days Stobbs coached in the minors and at George Washington University. He was never an All-Star, and his card carries no rookie or error designation. Stobbs died in 2008.
