About Don Hoak
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Don Hoak signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1947 and reached the majors as a third baseman in 1954. Over 11 seasons (1954-1964) he played for the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .265 with 1,144 hits, 89 home runs, and 498 RBI in 1,263 games. His card here captures him with Brooklyn, whose 1955 club he helped win the franchise's only World Series title, beating the Yankees in seven games. A ferocious competitor, he was nicknamed "Tiger" by Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince. Hoak enjoyed his best year in 1957 with Cincinnati, earning his lone All-Star selection while hitting .293 and leading the National League with 39 doubles. He anchored the 1960 Pirates to another seven-game Series win over the Yankees and finished second to teammate Dick Groat in NL MVP voting. He died of a heart attack in 1969 at age 41.
