About Sandy Koufax

Card #123 is the rookie card of Sandy Koufax, the Hall-of-Fame left-hander and one of the three signature rookies of the 1955 Topps set. A Brooklyn-born "bonus baby," Koufax signed with the Dodgers in December 1954 out of the University of Cincinnati and, under the bonus rule, jumped straight to the majors without a day in the minors, debuting June 24, 1955 at age 19. He pitched all 12 seasons (1955-1966) for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, was a seven-time All-Star, and won three unanimous Cy Young Awards (1963, 1965, 1966) plus the 1963 NL MVP. He anchored four World Series champions (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965) and was World Series MVP in 1963 and 1965. Koufax threw four no-hitters, capped by a perfect game against the Cubs on September 9, 1965, and finished 165-87 with a 2.76 ERA and 2,396 strikeouts. Nicknamed "The Left Arm of God," he retired at 30 due to an arthritic elbow and in 1972 became the youngest player ever elected to the Hall of Fame. This rookie's bright-yellow background readily shows print spots, making high grade tough.
