About Sandy Amoros
Edmundo "Sandy" Amoros, a Cuban-born left-handed outfielder, was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers after scout Al Campanis spotted him in Cuba; he had also played in the Negro Leagues with the New York Cubans before reaching the majors in 1952. A left fielder, he played seven big-league seasons for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers (1952-1957, 1959-1960) and the Detroit Tigers (1960), batting .255 with 334 hits, 43 home runs, and 180 RBI. Never an All-Star, Amoros is immortalized for one play: in the sixth inning of Game 7 of the 1955 World Series, he raced into the left-field corner to glove Yogi Berra's drive, then doubled Gil McDougald off first (throw to Pee Wee Reese, relay to Gil Hodges), preserving Brooklyn's only championship. Nicknamed "Sandy" for his resemblance to boxer Sandy Saddler, he died in 1992. This is his rookie card; the back's birth year (correctly 1930) is an uncorrected error.
