About Jim Gilliam
Jim "Junior" Gilliam broke into pro ball with the Negro Leagues' Baltimore Elite Giants in 1946, and the Brooklyn Dodgers purchased his contract in 1950. After two seasons with the Triple-A Montreal Royals - where he was named 1952 International League MVP - the switch-hitting infielder debuted with Brooklyn in 1953 and won National League Rookie of the Year, leading the league with 17 triples. He spent his entire 14-season career (1953-1966) in the Dodgers organization, moving with the club to Los Angeles in 1958 and playing chiefly second and third base. A two-time All-Star (1956, 1959), Gilliam was a key table-setter on four World Series championship teams (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965), batting .265 with 1,889 hits, 65 home runs, 558 RBI and 203 stolen bases over 1,956 games. Nicknamed "Junior" as a teenager in Baltimore, he became a Dodgers coach and remained one until a brain hemorrhage took his life at 49 in October 1978; the club retired his No. 19 before Game 1 of that year's World Series.
