1955 Topps #4 Al Kaline
1955 Topps #4 Al Kaline
Al Kaline's second-year card, the year he won the AL batting title at 20 (his rookie is 1954 Topps).

About Al Kaline
A "bonus baby" signed straight out of Baltimore's Southern High School in 1953 for a reported $15,000, Al Kaline never played a day in the minor leagues, going directly to the Detroit Tigers, where he spent his entire 22-season career (1953-1974). The graceful right fielder announced himself in 1955, this card's year, when he hit .340 to win the American League batting title at age 20, one day younger than Ty Cobb had been in 1907, making him the youngest batting champion in big-league history. An 18-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner, Kaline was the anchor of Detroit's 1968 World Series champions, batting .379 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI in the seven-game triumph over St. Louis. Nicknamed "Mr. Tiger" for his lifelong devotion to the franchise, he retired with a .297 average, exactly 3,007 hits, 399 home runs, and 1,583 RBI over 2,834 games. Detroit retired his No. 6, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1980. This is Kaline's second-year card; his rookie is the 1954 Topps.
