About Ray Boone
Ray Boone signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1942 for a $500 bonus, interrupted his climb through the minors for Navy service in World War II, and reached the majors in September 1948, earning a spot on Cleveland's World Series championship team in a bit role. A right-handed infielder, he took over at shortstop from player-manager Lou Boudreau and became the Indians' regular there in 1951 before a June 1953 trade sent him to the Detroit Tigers, who shifted him to third base. Boone was a two-time American League All-Star (1954 and 1956) and led the AL in RBI in 1955 with 116, tied with Boston's Jackie Jensen. Over 13 seasons (1948-1960) with the Indians, Tigers, White Sox, Athletics, Braves and Red Sox, he batted .275 with 1,260 hits, 151 home runs and 737 RBI in 1,373 games. Boone is best remembered as the patriarch of the Boone family: son Bob and grandsons Bret and Aaron all reached the majors, making the Boones the first family with three generations of big leaguers and the only one with All-Stars in each. After retiring he scouted for the Red Sox for more than 30 years, signing Curt Schilling. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
