About Ron Jackson
A towering first baseman from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Ronald Harris Jackson attended Western Michigan University before signing with the Chicago White Sox on June 15, 1954, as a "bonus baby" and debuting in the majors that very day. Because the era's bonus rule forced signees onto the big-league roster for two full seasons, the raw 20-year-old spent his development years riding the White Sox bench, and this 1955 Topps card #66 is his rookie card. Listed at roughly 6-foot-7, he was among the tallest players of his time and batted right-handed. Jackson appeared in 196 games over seven seasons (1954-1959 with Chicago, 1960 with Boston), hitting .245 with 116 hits, 17 home runs, and 52 RBI as a backup behind Walt Dropo. He shone in the minors, earning American Association All-Star first-base honors in 1957 and leading that league with 30 home runs for Indianapolis in 1959. After baseball he ran an insurance business in his hometown, where he died in 2008.
