About Jim Rivera
Manuel Joseph "Jungle Jim" Rivera was a daredevil outfielder whose road to the majors was like no other. Born July 22, 1921, in New York City, he served nearly five years in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary before his parole in 1949 was secured with help from Atlanta Crackers owner Earl Mann, who had seen him star on the prison team. Rivera tore through the minors and was named 1951 Pacific Coast League MVP with Seattle (.352), reaching the big leagues in 1952 at age 30. He played 10 seasons (1952-1961) for the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City Athletics, chiefly with the "Go-Go" White Sox. A speedster and superb defender, he led the American League with 16 triples in 1953 and 25 stolen bases in 1955, and started three games in the 1959 World Series, making a celebrated Game 5 defensive catch (though he went 0-for-11 at the plate). Sportswriter John Hoffman coined "Jungle Jim" around 1954 for his habit of flapping his arms to wave off teammates on fly balls. He retired with a .256 average, 83 home runs, 422 RBI, and 160 stolen bases over 1,171 games. This card carries a well-known error: the printed birth year of 1922 is incorrect, as Rivera was born in 1921.
