About Jack Harshman
Jack Harshman (John Elvin Harshman, 1927-2013) was a hard-throwing left-hander who reached the majors by a most unusual route: he signed with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League in 1945 as a slugging first baseman, and the New York Giants bought his contract in that role, giving him a September 1948 debut as a pinch-hitter. After several seasons as a power-hitting minor leaguer - he clubbed 47 home runs for Nashville in 1951 - he converted to pitching and went 23-7 there in 1953, winning Southern Association MVP honors. Sold to the White Sox, he pitched for Chicago (1954-1957), Baltimore, Boston, and Cleveland, finishing 69-65 with a 3.50 ERA and 741 strikeouts. On July 25, 1954, he fanned 16 Red Sox at Fenway Park - Ted Williams among them - a park record that stood until Roger Clemens in 1986; weeks later he threw a 16-inning shutout, the longest in White Sox history. A rare slugging pitcher, he hit 21 big-league home runs and was often used as a pinch-hitter.
