About Bob Keegan

A right-handed pitcher signed by the New York Yankees out of Bucknell University, Bob Keegan spent years in the minors - interrupted by U.S. Army Air Force service in World War II - before a 20-win 1952 season at Syracuse, where he led the International League in wins, finally earned him a shot. He reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox at age 32 in 1953 and pitched all six of his big-league seasons in Chicago (1953-1958). Keegan won 16 games in 1954 and was named to the American League All-Star team that summer. His signature moment came on August 20, 1957, when at age 37 he no-hit the Washington Senators 6-0 at Comiskey Park - the oldest White Sox hurler ever to throw a no-hitter. Nicknamed "Smiley," he finished 40-36 with a 3.66 ERA and 198 strikeouts. This card's back carries an uncorrected error listing his birth year wrong (he was born in 1920).
