About Carl Sawatski
A left-handed-hitting catcher, Carl Sawatski (1927-1991) signed with Philadelphia at 16 for a $500 bonus in 1944 and reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs, debuting September 29, 1948. Nicknamed "Swish" for the sound of his bat launching home runs, he crushed 45 homers for the Nashville Vols in 1949 to lead the Southern Association. Over 11 big-league seasons (1948-1963) he caught for the Cubs, the White Sox (his 1954 club, the team shown on this 1955 Topps card), Milwaukee Braves, Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals, batting .242 with 58 home runs and 213 RBI in 633 games. As the Braves' third catcher he earned a ring on the 1957 World Series champions. In 1962 he clubbed 13 homers in just 222 at-bats to tie the Cardinals' single-season record for a catcher. He later served as Texas League president from 1976 until his death.
