About Dick Donovan
A big right-hander who batted left, Dick Donovan was signed by Boston Braves scout Jeff Jones out of North Quincy (Mass.) High School, and after three years in the Navy and a long minor-league apprenticeship he reached the majors with the Braves in 1950. Card #146 is his Topps rookie card, issued the year he broke through: mastering the slider under Atlanta coach Whitlow Wyatt, he went 15-9 with the Chicago White Sox in 1955 and earned the first of his multiple All-Star selections (1955, 1961, and both 1962 games). Over 15 seasons with the Braves, Tigers, White Sox, Senators and Cleveland Indians he compiled a 122-99 record, a 3.67 ERA and 880 strikeouts. He led the AL in winning percentage in 1957 (16-6, .727), posted a league-best 2.40 ERA in 1961, and won 20 games for Cleveland in 1962, earning Sporting News AL Pitcher of the Year. Donovan pitched in the 1959 World Series for the pennant-winning White Sox, losing Game 3 to Don Drysdale but saving Game 5. An unusually good hitter for a pitcher, he clubbed 15 career home runs. He died of cancer in 1997.
