About Ed McGhee

Warren Edward "Ed" McGhee (1924-1986), a right-handed-hitting outfielder from Perry, Arkansas, attended Arkansas State University and signed with the Chicago White Sox, prepping in their farm system for five seasons (1948-52). He debuted on September 20, 1950, starting the season finale against the St. Louis Browns and lining a triple off Stubby Overmire for his first big-league hit. On January 27, 1953, McGhee went to the Philadelphia Athletics in the five-player trade that brought two-time AL batting champion Ferris Fain (card #11 in this same set) to Chicago. He got his one extended shot that year, serving as the Athletics' regular center fielder in 104 games, a career high. Traded back to the White Sox on June 11, 1954, he saw only part-time duty. Over four seasons (1950, 1953-55) with the Athletics and White Sox he batted .246 with 124 hits, 3 home runs, and 43 RBI in 196 games. His card back carries an uncorrected error listing the wrong birth year (it should read 1924). No nickname is documented for him.
