About Bob Miller
Robert Gerald Miller (1935-2022) was a left-handed pitcher from Berwyn, Illinois, who starred at Morton East High School with a 33-6 record and multiple no-hitters. The Detroit Tigers signed him as a "bonus baby" on June 20, 1953 for a $60,000 bonus, outbidding the Phillies and White Sox. Under the era's bonus rule he had to stay on the big-league roster, debuting on June 25, 1953 at just 17 - the youngest player in the majors that season, arriving the same year the Tigers introduced another teenage signee, Al Kaline. Miller pitched for Detroit (1953-56) before resurfacing in 1962 with the Cincinnati Reds and expansion New York Mets. He posted a 6-8 record with a 4.72 ERA and 75 strikeouts over 86 games. His most-told story comes from the 1962 Mets, whose staff carried two pitchers named Bob Miller; manager Casey Stengel took to calling the other one "Nelson" just to tell them apart. Miller never made an All-Star team or reached Cooperstown; this 1955 Topps card captures him as one of Detroit's much-hyped, hard-throwing young bonus arms.
