About Reno Bertoia
An Italian-born, Windsor, Ontario-raised infielder, Reno Bertoia was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1953 as one of baseball's original "bonus babies" under the new bonus rule, joining the major-league roster straight out of high school before a 1956 seasoning stint at Triple-A Charleston. Over 10 seasons (1953-1962) he played third and second base for the Tigers (1953-58, 1961-62), the Washington Senators (1959-60), the Minnesota Twins (1961), and the Kansas City Athletics (1961), batting .244 with 425 hits, 27 home runs, and 171 RBI across 612 games. His best year came in 1960 with Washington, when he set career highs of 122 hits and 45 RBI while hitting .265. On May 7, 1958 he connected for his first big-league grand slam off the Senators' Camilo Pascual, and for five seasons in Detroit he roomed with future Hall of Famer Al Kaline. After baseball Bertoia taught school in Windsor for three decades and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.
