About J.W. Porter

A red-haired catcher out of Oakland, California, J.W. "Jay" Porter was an American Legion sensation, winning back-to-back national titles (1949-50) with consecutive batting crowns before signing a then-record amateur bonus (per SABR, $67,500 with the White Sox) in December 1950, a month shy of his 18th birthday. He debuted July 30, 1952 with the St. Louis Browns and, over six major-league seasons, played for the Browns, Detroit Tigers (1955-57, the club shown on this card), Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and St. Louis Cardinals. A versatile fielder used at catcher, outfield, and first and third base, he batted .228 with 124 hits, 8 home runs, and 62 RBI across 229 games, peaking at .250 for Detroit in 1957. Satchel Paige nicknamed him "Firefly" for his red hair and freckles, and by his own account the initials "J.W." stood for absolutely nothing. Sports Illustrated later named him one of the "10 Greatest Characters in Detroit Tigers History."
