About Bob Kennedy
Signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1937 as a teenage third baseman, Bob Kennedy debuted in 1939 and, with a strong throwing arm, later settled in as a right fielder. A durable line-drive hitter, he played 16 major-league seasons (1939-1957) for the White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers and Brooklyn Dodgers, batting .254 with 1,176 hits, 63 home runs and 514 RBI over 1,483 games. He won a World Series with the 1948 Indians, delivering an RBI single in Game Two, and in 1950 he twice started triple plays from the outfield. His career was bracketed by military service: a Marine pilot and flight instructor in World War II (1943-45), where he trained Ted Williams at Pensacola, he was recalled again during the Korean War in 1952. His 1955 Topps card shows him with the Orioles, for whom he had hit Baltimore's first grand slam on July 30, 1954. Kennedy later managed the Chicago Cubs (1963-65) and Oakland Athletics (1968) and enjoyed a long front-office career, spending more than five decades in professional baseball.
