About Fred Marsh

Fred Francis Marsh (1924-2006) was a right-handed utility infielder, primarily a third baseman, born in Valley Falls, Kansas. Signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1942 out of Chicago's Steinmetz High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II before the Cleveland Indians acquired him; he reached the majors with Cleveland in 1949. Over parts of seven big-league seasons (1949, 1951-1956) he played for the Indians, St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, hitting .239 with 296 hits, 43 doubles, 10 home runs and 96 RBI in 465 games, with his best year a .306 mark in 1954. Traded to Baltimore in December 1954, Marsh played 89 games for the Orioles in 1955 - the season pictured on this Series 1 card - and finished his career there in 1956. He was never an All-Star, and after baseball he worked for years as a postal carrier. He died in Corry, Pennsylvania, in 2006.
