About Willie Miranda

A brilliant defensive shortstop, Guillermo "Willy" Miranda Perez was signed out of Cuba by Washington scout Joe Cambria in 1948 and reached the majors in 1951 after seasoning at Sherman-Denison and Chattanooga. Over nine seasons (1951-1959) the switch-hitter, who threw right-handed, suited up for the Senators, White Sox, Browns, Yankees, and Orioles, prized everywhere for his spectacular range and acrobatic glovework - Tommy Lasorda called him the best shortstop he ever saw, and manager Paul Richards likened his flair to a circus act. Miranda was on the Yankees' 1953 World Series roster but did not appear, then went to Baltimore in the famous 17-player trade of November 17, 1954, the largest in big-league history. He anchored the young Orioles and led the American League in double plays in 1955. A notoriously light hitter, he batted .221 with 6 home runs and 132 RBI over 824 games. This is his first Orioles-era Topps card; the back's birth year is an uncorrected error (he was born in 1926), and the card lists him as "Willie" though he went by "Willy."
