About Joe Coleman
A right-handed pitcher out of Medford, Massachusetts, Joe Coleman signed with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1940 and debuted in 1942 before Navy service in the Pacific during World War II interrupted his career. Across 10 major-league seasons (1942, 1946-1955) with the Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers, he went 52-76 with a 4.38 ERA and 444 strikeouts in 223 games. He earned a 1948 All-Star selection, tossing three hitless innings, and enjoyed his finest year in 1954 for the new Orioles: 13-17 with four shutouts and a near no-hitter (a one-hitter against the Yankees on September 9), which brought Boston writers' Comeback Player honors. Snubbed for the 1954 All-Star team, he was tagged "Discarded Joe" in the press. He was the father of Joe Coleman, a big-league pitcher from 1965-1979. This high-number Series 2 card is scarcer than the set's low numbers.
