About Harry Brecheen
Harry "The Cat" Brecheen was a crafty left-handed screwball artist who signed out of the minors after a breakout 21-6 season at Portsmouth in 1937 and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. He debuted in 1940 and pitched 12 major-league seasons, all with the Cardinals (1940, 1943-1952) except a final year with the St. Louis Browns in 1953, going 133-92 with a 2.92 ERA and 901 strikeouts. A two-time All-Star (1947-48), he peaked in 1948 when he went 20-7 and led the National League in ERA (2.24), strikeouts (149), and shutouts (7). His signature moment came in the 1946 World Series against Boston, when he became the first left-hander to win three games in a single Series-including the Game 7 relief win after Enos Slaughter's "Mad Dash"; his 0.83 career Series ERA stood as a record from 1946 to 1976. Sportswriter Roy Stockton coined "The Cat" in 1943 for his feline reflexes fielding bunts. This 1955 card depicts him in his second career as Baltimore Orioles pitching coach (1954-1967), where he later mentored Jim Palmer and Dave McNally.
