About Gus Triandos

This is the rookie card of Gus Triandos, the slugging catcher who became the face of the early Baltimore Orioles. Signed by the New York Yankees as an 18-year-old in 1948, Triandos debuted in New York in 1953 but was blocked by Yogi Berra, and came to Baltimore in the famous 17-player trade of November 17, 1954 - the largest two-team swap in major-league history - making 1955 his first full season. A four-time All-Star, the right-handed hitter tied Berra's AL record with 30 home runs by a catcher in 1958 and finished with a .244 average, 167 home runs, and 608 RBI over 1,206 games (also with the Tigers, Phillies, and Astros). He is best remembered as the first catcher to catch no-hitters in both leagues: Hoyt Wilhelm's 1958 gem (the Orioles' first no-hitter, in which Triandos also hit the game-winning homer) and Jim Bunning's 1964 perfect game. Nicknamed "The Golden Greek" and famed as one of the slowest baserunners of his era, he entered the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1981.
