About Faye Throneberry
Maynard Faye Throneberry, always known as "Faye," was a left-handed-hitting, right-throwing outfielder born June 22, 1931, in Fisherville, Tennessee (d. 1999, Memphis). Red Sox scout George Digby signed him in 1950, and after two seasons with the Single-A Scranton Miners he debuted with Boston on April 15, 1952. Two years of U.S. Army service in 1953-54 interrupted his career. He played eight big-league seasons for the Boston Red Sox (1952, 1955-57), Washington Senators (1957-60), and Los Angeles Angels (1961), hitting .236 with 307 hits, 29 home runs, 137 RBI, and 23 stolen bases over 521 games. His brightest stretch came in April 1955, when he batted .362 before a shoulder injury and Ted Williams' return cooled him off; a Boston cartoonist dubbed him "fiery Faye" that spring. He was the older brother of Marv "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry, and after baseball became a champion bird-dog trainer, handling a 1973 national field-trial titlist. This card is a scarcer 1955 Topps high number (#163).
