About Tom Brewer

A right-handed pitcher out of Wadesboro, North Carolina, Tom Brewer starred at Elon College before Red Sox scout Mace Brown signed him in April 1951 for a $6,000 bonus. He went 19-3 with a 2.55 ERA for the Class D High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms that summer, then served two years in the Army before reaching Boston. Brewer spent his entire eight-year major-league career (1954-1961) with the Red Sox, and this 1955 Topps card is his rookie card. His signature season came in 1956, when he went 19-9 and earned his lone All-Star selection; in the All-Star Game at Washington's Griffith Stadium he surrendered a home run to Stan Musial. A fine athlete who hit and ran well enough that Lou Boudreau likened him to Bob Lemon, Brewer finished 91-82 with a 4.00 ERA, 733 strikeouts, 75 complete games, and 13 shutouts before shoulder trouble ended his career at age 30 in 1961.
