1955 Topps #2 Ted Williams

About Ted Williams
Widely regarded as the greatest pure hitter in baseball history, Ted Williams signed with his hometown San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League while still in high school, then came to the Boston Red Sox in a December 1937 trade. A left fielder, he spent his entire 19-season major-league career with Boston (1939-1942, 1946-1960), his prime interrupted twice by military service as a Marine and Navy aviator in World War II and the Korean War, where he flew combat missions. He batted .344 with 2,654 hits, 521 home runs, and 1,839 RBI, won two AL MVP awards (1946, 1949), six batting titles, and two Triple Crowns (1942, 1947). In 1941 he hit .406, the last man to top .400 for a season. Nicknamed "The Splendid Splinter" for his tall, thin frame and "Teddy Ballgame," he homered in his final major-league at-bat on September 28, 1960, and was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1966. This marquee low-number card is known with a minor signature-dot printing variation, and its back misprints his birth date (correctly August 30, 1918), an uncorrected error.
