1955 Topps #1 Dusty Rhodes
1955 Topps #1 Dusty Rhodes
The set's #1 card - Dusty Rhodes, hitting hero and World Series MVP of the New York Giants' 1954 sweep. As card #1 it sat atop rubber-banded stacks, so it is condition-sensitive and carries a premium in high grade.

About Dusty Rhodes
James Lamar "Dusty" Rhodes (1927-2009), a left-handed outfielder and pinch-hitter from Montgomery County, Alabama, was discovered by scout Bruce Hayes playing semipro ball and turned pro in the late 1940s after Navy service in World War II. He reached the majors with the New York Giants in 1952 and played seven seasons (1952-1957, 1959) with the New York/San Francisco Giants, batting .253 with 296 hits, 54 home runs, and 207 RBI over 576 games. His signature moment came in 1954: platooning and pinch-hitting, he hit .341 with 15 homers and 50 RBI in limited duty, then almost single-handedly carried the underdog Giants' four-game World Series sweep of the Cleveland Indians. He delivered key hits in three of the four wins, capping Game 1 with a pinch-hit, tenth-inning walk-off home run off ace Bob Lemon. The nickname "Dusty" simply followed the old baseball custom of calling every player named Rhodes "Dusty." As card #1 in the set, this issue honors the 1954 Series hero but sat atop rubber-banded stacks, making high-grade copies scarce and premium.
