About Bill Taylor

A towering 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter, William Michael Taylor signed with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1947 and was acquired by the New York Giants during the 1950 minor-league season. A prolific minor leaguer, he hit .350 with 22 home runs for Nashville in 1953 and finished with a .311 average and 186 home runs across 1,261 games in the bushes, but that power never fully translated in the majors. Taylor reached the big leagues with the Giants in 1954 and played parts of five seasons (1954-1957 Giants, 1957-1958 Detroit Tigers), serving mostly as a pinch hitter and backup outfielder. He batted .237 with 41 hits, 7 home runs, and 26 RBI over 149 games. Though he was on the roster of the Giants' 1954 World Series championship team that swept Cleveland, he did not appear in the Series. Away from the majors he starred in the Venezuelan Winter League, becoming the first player in league history to hit three home runs in a single game. This card, #53 in the 1955 Topps set, pictures him as a Giant. Taylor died in 2011 at age 81.
