About Bobby Hofman
Robert George Hofman (1925-1994), a St. Louis native, was signed by New York Giants scout Gordon Maguire in 1944 out of Beaumont High School and, after wartime military service in Europe and a climb through the Giants' farm system, spent his entire seven-year major-league career with the club (1949; 1952-1957). A right-handed batter, he was a valued utilityman who logged time at second base, first base, third base, and catcher while earning his keep as one of the era's premier pinch-hitters, leading the National League with three pinch-hit home runs in 1954. Over 341 games he hit .248 with 32 home runs and 101 RBI. Hofman was on the roster of the Giants' 1954 World Series championship team that swept Cleveland, though he did not appear in the Series. After his playing days he became a longtime coach - earning a second title ring on Alvin Dark's 1974 Oakland Athletics champions - and later served as the New York Yankees' director of scouting and player development. He was related to former Chicago Cubs star Arthur "Solly" Hofman.
