About Ruben Gomez
A screwball-throwing right-hander from Arroyo, Puerto Rico, Ruben Gomez signed with the Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rican winter league in 1947 and reached the majors with the New York Giants in 1953. Over 10 big-league seasons (1953-1958 with the New York/San Francisco Giants, plus stints with the Phillies, Indians, and Twins through 1967) he went 76-86 with a 4.09 ERA, 677 strikeouts, and 15 shutouts in 289 games. His finest year was 1954, when he went 17-9 with a 2.88 ERA and four shutouts for the world-champion Giants and, on October 1, threw a complete-game 6-2 win over Cleveland in Game 3 of the World Series -- becoming the first Puerto Rican to start and win a Series game, as schools back home closed so children could listen. On April 15, 1958, he won the first big-league game played on the West Coast, an 8-0 shutout at Seals Stadium. Nicknamed "El Divino Loco" (the Divine Madman) for his fearlessness on the mound and reckless driving off it, he set Puerto Rican winter-league records with 174 wins and later entered the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball Hall of Fame (1991). He died in 2004.
