About Al Rosen
Al Rosen left the University of Florida after one semester to chase pro ball, starring in the minors before joining the Cleveland Indians - the only team he played for across his entire career (1947-1956). A right-handed third baseman, he broke through in 1950 with a rookie-record 37 home runs, becoming the first rookie to lead the American League in homers. His finest year was 1953, when he was voted the AL Most Valuable Player unanimously, pacing the league in home runs (43), RBI (145), runs, and slugging while missing the Triple Crown by roughly a single point (.336). A four-time All-Star (1952-1955) who drove in 100-plus runs five straight seasons, Rosen twice led the AL in homers (1950, 1953) and twice in RBI (1952-1953), and was a reserve on Cleveland's 1948 World Series champions. He hit .285 with 192 home runs and 717 RBI over 1,044 games. Nicknamed "the Hebrew Hammer" after dominating the minors in 1946 - the same moniker as his idol Hank Greenberg - he later ran the front offices of the Yankees, Astros, and Giants, winning the 1978 World Series as Yankees president. This card's back carries an uncorrected birth-date error, listing 3/1/1925 instead of his actual 2/29/1924.
