About Ray Narleski
Signed by the Cleveland Indians out of a New Jersey high school, right-handed reliever Ray Narleski reached the majors in 1954 and pitched six seasons (1954-58 Cleveland, 1959 Detroit), overpowering hitters with a blazing fastball and sharp curve. The son of Red Sox infielder Bill Narleski, he broke in during Cleveland's 110-win 1954 pennant year and worked Games 3 and 4 of that World Series, allowing one run over four innings as the Giants swept. In 1955 he went 9-1 and led the AL with 60 appearances, and his 19 saves would have topped the league had the save been an official stat, finishing sixth in MVP voting. A two-time All-Star (1956, 1958), he paired with lefty Don Mossi to form a bullpen duo dubbed the "Gold Dust Twins." Narleski finished 43-33 with a 3.60 ERA, 454 strikeouts and 58 saves, and was named to Cleveland's Top 100 Greatest Indians in 2001. This is his rookie card.
